Drivers with an 'L' License

NHRA and Mission Raceway Park has approved the following process which would permit students holding an 'L' drivers license to compete in the High School drag racing series.  Students must undergo a formal driver training process which must be logged on the attached form.  It is the sponsor teacher's responsibility to ensure that the student has completed the following mandatory training process.  All NHRA and BCSSMA rules apply.  These are to be used as a supplement.

Novice Training process:

1)    Parents of all 'L' drivers must accompany the student to the track for the pre-season orientation (Dates TBA).

2)    A brief orientation session will occur prior to driving sessions.  Both student and parent must attend.

3)    Sponsor teacher will demonstrate one pass with the student and parent in the car (Max. speed of 50 km/h (30mph)).

4)    Parent will drive one pass with teacher and student in the car (Max. speed of 50 km/h (30mph)).

5)    Student will drive with parent in the car (Detailed below).

6)    Teacher will observe.

Detailed Student Procedure Rules:

1)    Student must demonstrate 8 passes of the quarter mile. The log sheet must be accurate (Use “L-Driver Log” form) and keep ET slips.

2)    For the first three passes, a student must not exceed 80 Km/h (50mph).

3)    Students are restricted to a 16 second or slower street legal vehicle.  Vehicles that are capable of going under 14 seconds are not permitted.

4)    Novice drivers will run in the tower lane only.

5)    Approved NHRA Helmets must be worn by student and passenger. Must wear full-length pants, shoes, socks and a T-shirt (No tank tops). Nylon or Nylon-type clothing and open-toe shoes prohibited.

6)    A sponsor teacher, parent or experienced drag racer must accompany the novice on all training runs.

7)    Upon successful completion of the novice training program, a decision on an upgrade to a senior race license would be made by the sponsor teacher in consultation with a BCSSMA executive member.

“L” LICENSING PROGRAM

Drivers with an 'L' License

History:

The Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC) established a Graduated Licensing Program (GLP) on August 1st, 1998. The two-phase licensing system is designed to allow new drivers to gain driving experience gradually in restricted lower risk environments. The GLP was changed in October of 2003 increasing the amount of time in the learning stages and again amended in March 2007. The Class 7 ("Novice") license is considered a restricted Class 5 license and meets all NHRA rule. The new Class 7L ("Learners") license is the issue at hand.

The March 23rd, 2006 letter from Kevin Besta, at Jones Brown Motorsports (NHRA Insurance Brokers), states: “All participants who have a current driver’s license regardless of specific class are permitted within the insurance coverage to drive without having another licensed driver with them”. NHRA’s Division 6 Director Jonathan Adams, has subsequently given his approval to Wally Duperon (Mission Raceway Race Director), pending a procedural process of sanctioning “L” licensed drivers for Drag Racing competition.

As of January 1st, 2007, a new driver orientation course for “L” drivers will be implemented. “L” drivers must successfully complete this program before they can race in competition. This program will involve the students, their parents, and the sponsor teacher. Mission Raceway will be offering a track date in late March/early April for this orientation.

Participants:

·         Students must hold a valid B.C. Class 7L license with a minimum of 12 hours of logged street driving.

·         The Parent (or legal Guardian) of the Student

·         A 16 second or slower street legal vehicle (Vehicles that are capable of going under 14 seconds are not permitted).

·         The Student’s sponsor Teacher.

·         Schools must be BCSSMA members in good standing to participate.
