H.S. TECH BULLETIN:
2007
To avoid
future confusion and possible rejection from competing, the Tech Department(s)
request that the instructors/sponsors of High School Race Teams pass the
following information along.
TO AVOID
DISAPPOINTMENT AND/OR FRUSTRATION
IN YOUR
RACING ENDEAVORS…
·
Vehicles
should arrive at the race track Tech area fully prepared to
race.
·
Have
your club/team purchase a CURRENT year NHRA rulebook - these are available from
your local speed shop or the track souvenir booth.
·
Please
have your vehicle inspected by your Autoshop/Sponsor
teacher before bringing it out to the track…be prepared to demonstrate that all
safety requirements are being met.
·
Fill out
your Tech Card COMPLETELY and CORRECTLY BEFORE you bring your vehicle to the
Tech Inspection area.

TWELVE MOST COMMON PROBLEMS FOUND ON H.S. RACE VEHICLES:
1.
Hubcaps/Wheel
covers must be removed…inspectors will check f or incorrect, loose or missing
lug nuts, cracked wheels, worn or oversized lug holes. Wheel studs must be threaded into HEX
PORTION of lug nut at least the distance of the diameter of the
stud.
2.
Batteries
must be securely mounted, stock or metal hold-down straps/bolts, with a minimum
of 3/8" diameter.
3.
Fuel
lines - a maximum of 12" total of rubber fuel line/hose permitted (This refers
to the complete fuel system from the tank to the carb(s). Plastic and/or glass filters are
prohibited.
4.
Automatic
transmissions must be equipped with a functional NEUTRAL SAFETY
SWITCH.
5.
Firewall(s)
- must be completely sealed between engine and driver's compartment. Rear
firewall is required, also completely sealed, if fuel tank and/or battery are
relocated to inside of trunk.
6.
Aggressive
treaded tires are prohibited - i.e.: Snow tires, All-terrain, etc. Tires most be
of legal tread depth and in good shape (No cracks, cuts or abnormal wear
pattern).
7.
Crankshaft
centerline must not exceed 24" from ground, "except for OEM trucks where
centerline must not exceed 36" from ground.
8.
Cooling
Systems- A coolant overflow container having a minimum of 16oz capacity. NOTE: Antifreeze is prohibited at
Mission Raceway except for 1995 and newer vehicles factory equipped with CLOSED
COOLING SYSTEMS.
9.
Windows
and windshields must be clear, free of cracks, NON-TINTED (except for OEM
tinted safety class). Windows must be closed during races…they need not be
operable. Decals are permitted on rear quarter and rear window
only.
10. A drive
shaft loop is required on all cars running 13.99 seconds or quicker, except cars
equipped with street tires running 13.00 seconds or
slower.
11. Oil
pressure gauge line must be either metal or steel braided – Plastic lines
prohibited.
12. A
positive-acting throttle return spring must be directly secured to the
carburetor throttle arm and engine to prevent throttle from sticking in an open
position.
DRIVERS: Helmet meeting SNELL rating: K-98, M or
SA Rated - 2000, or 2005 or SFI Spec 24.1, 31.1A, 31.2A, 41.1A or 41.2A
mandatory in all high school cars (Must have specification decal secured inside
of helmet). Please note: DOT approved helmets DO NOT meet SNELL or NHRA
specifications. Must wear full-length pants, shoes, socks and a T-shirt (No tank
tops). Nylon or Nylon-type clothing and open-toe shoes
prohibited.
PASSENGERS: No more than one
passenger permitted in 14.00 second and slower ET cars; Passengers must be a
minimum of 16 years of age and must wear an NHRA approved helmet. Must wear
full-length pants, shoes, socks and a T-shirt (No tank tops). Nylon or
Nylon-type clothing and open-toe shoes prohibited. Passengers are NOT allowed in
Eliminations.
VEHICLE
APPEARANCE: Vehicles participating in drag
racing events must be presentable in appearance at all times; those vehicles
considered improperly prepared may be rejected by the Tech
Department.
B.C.S.S.M.A. HIGH SCHOOL
CLASS:
Minimum E.T. (Elapsed Time) is 12
seconds in ¼ mile. Disqualification and Penalties are
imposed on breaking this rule. See BCSSMA Rules and Race Procedures for more
information.
